Challenge Day: Liskeard School and Community College

Back to Case Studies

RIO is working with a group of passionate year 9 students from Liskeard Community College to create a social enterprise business concept that expands and improves the vitality and viability, energy and enthusiasm of Liskeard town.

The process started with a day facilitated by RIO where the students were introduced to their challenge – one of which would produce real outcomes that could make a real difference to not only the participants, but the community as a whole.

The group looked at creating a business that would leave a legacy, a business that made Liskeard an even better place, and a business that supported and collaborated with other businesses and community groups.  It was important that the students understood that an individual business will succeed only if the businesses around it were also succeeding.

The day was high energy, and the group of young people were engaged, passionate and professional throughout.  The results were three terrific pitches that were judged by a panel to which they shared their concepts.

The outcome of the day was the beginning of the HOPE Festival, Caring about the ‘Happiness Of People Everywhere’.  The event will be creative, educational, inspirational and above all, all about Liskeard!

The team are now working on the Planning Phase; they have actively cultivated support from the pupils in the school by hosting an assembly to all year groups, and have been meeting with staff to share their ideas and look at the logistics of the delivery.  They will be writing a Case for Support to gain financial and non-financial support, and they are also working on a marketing and communications campaign with flash mob, guerrilla marketing and many other FUN techniques that have powerful outcomes and create great ‘learning through doing’ opportunities.
